Is the F35 really that good at air combat compared to what our potential enemies are starting to put out? Yes.
How is the F35's range when carrying a full combat load? Stores are internal, so no increased drag. Would have to substitute fuel for weapons due to gross weight limitations, but that's a battle we all face.
Can it carry much armament and keep it's stealth capabilities? Again, internal stores.
What is it's loiter time over the battlespace in a CAS environment? Depends on how far away it is based and whether or not Air Refueling is available.
Can it loiter over the battlefield and keep enemy heads down with it's gun while it waits on more aircraft to arrive with more JDAMs and missiles? It will not hold as many rounds as the A-10, but yes it will be able to strafe if needed.
Will it's pilots be anywhere near as proficient at CAS since they will also have to focus some of their training on other missions? No, but again lots of aircrew face the battle of training to multiple mission types. That isn't unique to the F-35.
Back to one of my points, if we can't gain and maintain Air Superiority all talks about Close Air Support are off the table.

Too expensive too keep is bull, it's a paid for program whose GE engines were used extensively and upgraded on thousands air craft in the civilian world. So retrofit would be much cheaper. The big gun is fine, the platform is simple, avionics the same, built like a tank, ability to stay at station for extended periods. Truth is that the Air Force has been trying to dump them since I was in the service and only after Army interest in taking over the program did they reverse course. I saw many of them during wartime and our tactics were based on assets from armor, helicopter, and fixed wing via the A10, nothing else better is there.

It never should have been an Air Force plane. That bird screams Marines.

Miss seeing the hogs fly here over the Westbank.
My dad was a mechanic with the old 926 out of belle chasse, got to see them up close quite a few times.
Great plane!

My friends who are jtacs have posted some pretty badass videos of dry CAS runs with the A-10. It will make your dick stand up.
