Long story short, a friend has a golden retriever that wasn’t trained properly as a puppy and we need to get the dog trained. It’s not aggressive or anything, just flat out doesn’t listen and only responds to food. Both of us work so we unfortunately can’t spend all day training the dog (dog shouldn’t have been adopted in the first place IMO) A. Is it too late to train the dog? B. Who do we contact about training an older dog? Once again, dog isn’t aggressive at all, just not the brightest.
A four year old golden retriever is extremely trainable. Honestly, I wouldn’t contact anyone. Just decide the house rules and enforce them calmly but firmly and consistently. Don’t give the dog attention unless they’re calm. Don’t give the dog food unless they make eye contact first. This should take about a week of consistency, then take your wife for a nice meal with the training money.

Two tools that are very helpful are a shock collar (and no you don't shock them that much, the beep and vibrate function will do the trick) and a pronged training collar.
For some dogs this ok, but a golden retriever is WAY TOO sensitive for these.

We have been using treats every time to make her get in her crate and go outside to the bathroom. If there isn’t a treat in your hand she won’t even acknowledge you
She doesn’t know you yet. Be patient and try bonding activities such as a hike in new terrain. If you want her to see you as her leader, you need to lead her somewhere.

This. Goldens are very trainable at any age. Consistency is the key, and everyone in the house needs to buy in. won't take long to make it a good dog.

Food is a powerful motivator, use it to your advantage. Look into clicker, or marker training. Get the dog excited to engage and interact with you. The food is one tool for that, learning to use play as a reward is another. Check out some videos by Michael Ellis to see what using food and play to train can accomplish.

Since starting this thread a few weeks ago she has gotten much better at responding to commands. I think she is just a stubborn dog.
