First, Afghanistan is not in the Middle East.
Next, they can grow whatever cash crop they wish. Because we invaded that place, we get 100% rule over it?
Lastly, limiting supply will not stop drug usage.

A hectare is roughly 100 acres

That would be a quick way to get anyone that isn't against the US to become an enemy. Those crops are the only reason a ton of farmers and other locals survive.

And who would stand to lose the most money by destroying these fields?
Afghani's and cartels?
I have no idea.
I don't really care who loses money.

Bravo. Not a lot of people know that.

Under what authority? By what right? They are sovereign nations.... Would be a declaration of war, if that matters.

Well, I didn't say it was just US who could do this. I don't want to create more US hate than there already is. That's why I was thinking about introducing something to kill it without making some huge bombing/military event.

If the heroin supply in America was cut in half, that would be a good thing. Right? Its the ultimate opiate.
FTR, I am for decriminalizing drugs for people who get caught using. But I am also for trying to limit the availability of it. There are hundreds of thousands of testimonials of heroin users that said they started it because it was so easy to get and so cheap.

our heroin comes from mexico

BY WHAT DAMN RIGHT DO WE DESTROY ANOTHER NATIONS CROPS?!!!!
Would you object if another nation took actions to topple our country from within because we are spreading democracy?

They get it from Afghanistan for the most part.

not sure about that. Mexico and Columbia produce plenty of poppy
Posted on 1/20/16 at 3:50 pm to TheCaterpillar
As early as 2010, the US has neglected to do anything about Poppy plants in Afghanistan.
NY Times
I would make a bet that they take a little cash under the table for not wiping these fields out.

KABUL, Afghanistan — The effort to win over Afghans on former Taliban turf in Marja has put American and NATO commanders in the unusual position of arguing against opium eradication, pitting them against some Afghan officials who are pushing to destroy the harvest.

I understand this sentiment, I really do.
But this isn't corn or sugar. This is mainly farmed just to create heroin for the outside world.
I'm just brainstorming here. Would there be a way to cut off the shipping routes? Could the UN make a deal with the country to pay them to destroy the fields themselves?

Well, no shite. We need the wealthy people of Afghanistan to be on our side. Those people are usually farmers or other businessmen. We're not going to piss them off. You have to protect them, let them sell their dope, and then they can buy weapons from us. Then they can fight for themselves.

I thought farmers get fricked out of the money and warlords took it all? Similar to cocaine in Colombia.

In South America and Central America, yes. I think it was different in Afghanistan because it was the actual terrorist groups who took over the farms. I'm pretty sure our troops got them to relinquish control of many of the crops. I'm not sure. It has been a while since I've read up on it.

IIRC, and as the article points out, the Taliban actually tried to wipe out the fields. The US stepped in and said, "we'll protect your fields and you if you give us your support". In a fricked up way the US then controlled a good portion of the world's opium supply.
