What my dad always told me is Cajun is an actual ethnic group and coonasses are wannabe Cajuns.

Your dad is an idiot....

You cant be a coonass with out being a cajun. The dumb, illiterate, backwards arse cajuns were called coonasses by the non-French-speaking American soldier, either out of jealousy, or invidious jest, began to harass the Louisiana soldier by calling him "coonass" as a take-off on the word conasse used by the French forces. The French noun conasse is defined as:"a stupid woman or man

I don't think I-10 is a good line, I use Alexandria. Once you get above Alex they eat white gravy and to me that's redneck. Don't get me wrong I like white gravy but I prefer brown. Also my grandmother, who was from French Settlement and spoke french better than english always referred to herself as a Coonass. I don't get offended by it. It doesn't really matter to me

Are Cajuns all within the boundaries of LA, or do the ones in S MS and S AL still count as Cajun?

Just saying. It's not some cute term to be used by people who want to feel like they're fitting in with Cajuns. I'm glad most Cajuns can use it for their own purpose and call each other that but it does bother me when a non-Cajun says it.

you sound a little too sensitive

I grew up with family that's so cajun that my grandparents speak fluent French and my great grandmother spoke French almost exclusively.
Same here except my great grandmother did speak French exclusively. Could understand English a little but didn't speak it.

No it doesnt. You are either Cajun or not. That has nothing to do with where you are born anymore.

Oh I'm sure there are Cajuns spread out wide. Unless they're dirty Protestants.
