24 hour news cycle and the proliferation of news outlets on the internet. They need a constant supply of fresh content to keep getting views or clicks.

People inclined to religious fanaticism used to go to daily mass, attend every church group event, and gossip about fellow parishioners behind their backs.

In our post-Church culture, these same types worship at the altar of corporate media, wear pussy hats while attending protests against free speech, and donate to Michael Avenatti's campaign fund

I don’t think there is more news; there are just an infinite amount of places shoving the “news” down your throat now. Things that would have normally stayed local or regional news now gets blasted around the world.
