I've lived in the South for 50 years and have never known anyone that did this. If I ask someone if they want a Cole, it's because Pepsi sucks and Coke is what I have in the house.
And I refer to Gatorade as Gatorade and Powerade as crap.

could be regional
I heard the OP's reference back in the 80's from a girl who visited texas, not sure where...said the same thing, that no matter what it was, it was a "coke"...never been there myself...I don't think it matters a whole lot either way...
