I have loaned out some special tools I have, but it is with the understanding I want them returned promptly and clean, just the way you got them.
If I have to ask for them back, don't ever ask again for the favor. Only one time I had to ask for the return. He never asked again.

I usually don't borrow I'll rent equipment but if I do I return it promptly, cleaned like new and full of gas if it needs it. People lack respect these days.

my dad comes and grabs tools from me all the time, has my dewalt framing nailer right now to do something at the lake. We take care of our stuff though so I don't sweat it.
I have some friends that I will lend stuff to or at least I will take the stuff over and help them and they do the same when needed.
Otherwise, I don't lend anything out. I rarely, and I mean rarely, loan money to anyone. If I do, it is like 20 bucks here or there so if they don't pay me back I know they won't ask for anything else again.
