It's mostly played up for the TV. Most of what you see isn't tolerated anymore. Many of the things I got exposed to when I first went to work offshore would result in immediate termination.
I've been dunked in the water by the crane operator while riding the man basket.
Nearly killed trying to take a riding basket onto a boat while the rig was in tow. The riding basket just started swinging out of control and we were holding on for dear life. That same rig move the rig nearly sunk in a huge storm and the engine room caught on fire. Everyone on the rig was huddled up inside with their life jackets on.
We've convinced guys to try and ride the pipe up the derrick and (dope) grease the pipe under him. The driller would stop the blocks and the guy would have to slide down the greased pipe.
I've ridden the kelly bushings (more than once)
Got stuck in the derrick once with water spouts all around us. When they called me down the wind was blowing too hard for me to descend the ladder. We ride a counterweight down and I was just blowing off to the side of the ladder. I had to tie myself down to the monkey board and ride it out. We were near the Sabine River ship channel. The storm was so bad it blew a ship aground near our rig.
Many more stories but that's just a few.

We got the wise idea to put grated Parmesan cheese inside a guys pillow case once. We had no idea how powerful it would be after he slept on it one night. Stunk up all the living quarters.
I watched this really dense guy send the emergency escape ladder off the rig once. It was a big metal one with a cage around the ladder. For some reason still unknown to me he just flipped the gear stop over without the brake on. Holy shite that thing started unspooling so fast I thought the winch was going to catch fire. I just sat back and watched it go. Right into the ocean, cable and all.
It was the escape ladder next to the living quarters so it woke EVERYONE on the rig up. The Mississippi toolpusher came running up the stairs and just looks at us staring at the empty hole where the ladder used to be and he says "welp that fricker is gone"

I actually have two pretty good stories involving LCD on offshore rigs.
1st - Our rig was in dry dock in Mobile for repairs. The barge engineer knew I liked to smoke pot. We were around our vehicles after a day of work and he asks if I have any. I responded no but I have some LCD. Long story short. He drops two really strong hits of acid, doesn't sleep all night, and the coast guard shows up the next morning to run us through fire fighting drills. Guess who are lead fire fighter was? Yes the barge engineer. I'll never forget his face in that firefighting mask tripping his balls off fighting fake fires.
2nd - I was on a semi-sub during a mild tropical storm. The company we were drilling for decided it wasn't bad enough to evacuate us. Again I just so happen to have some LCD I had brought out for one of the mud loggers. The rig was shut down until the storm passed and we had to all stay inside. I convinced him it would be a good idea to drop acid during the tropical storm. Poor guy spent 12 hours locked in his room.

Had one incident on a job about an hour and some change south of San Antonio. The rig I was on was getting ready to trip pipe (pull the drill pipe out of the hole) at the end of my tour/shift to replace the drill bit. My relief came in, we did turnover, and I left. Came back at around 5:30 that evening and noticed there was hardly any drill pipe in the derrick/monkey board (where the drill pipe is stored during a trip). This struck me as odd because the rig crew was slow as frick and a full pipe trip typically took anywhere from 24-30 hours. At first I figured maybe they got stuck or the top drive crapped out on them. Turns out the operator decided to do a rig-wide random drug screening that day and most of the crew failed, leaving nobody to pull pipe
Also saw 2 different rig crews get into a full blown brawl at a bar in Kenedy, TX over who can trip pipe faster.
