I bought a Surface laptop with ARM processor for law school. It worked out great until I couldn't use it to take my exams on Examplify because of the ARM processer and I had to dust off an old laptop to take exams.

You kids and your new fangled toys. All I had was a Montblanc and a stack of blue books. Over 30 years later I still have the Montblanc.

I am 52 years old.

You are just young enough to be on the back side of computers in the classroom. I'm 58 and we had one person in my law school class with a portable computer. Profs made her sit in the back of the class because of the clickity clack. It was a huge clunky 286 based computer.

We couldn't take exams on the computer if you wanted to type they had rooms with the schools IBM Selectrics you could use. I remember one person did that during my 2L year for the Agency and Partnership exam.

Get a Surface with a real processor. The last gen one I got on eBay with an AMD ($280) two months ago has close to seven hours of battery life at full brightness. OP, make sure the laptop is light, under 3.5lbs if possible.

You can get a laptop from the Dell outlet store.

Buy a scratch and dented not a refurbished.

Save a fortune.

My last two came from there.

My XPS laptop had a giant scratch on the outside like from a razor knife opening it up.

Didn't affect the function. Save 40%. I still have it and that's been 10 years ago.

Since you're not getting any security updates, do you mind posting your public IP?

As a professor that deals with this every fall, I would tell you that unless your kid is going into a graphics/design-heavy area, do not buy a Mac. And even then, I would still recommend against it.

One, most schools get free access to microsoft 365, and the mac version is seriously lacking in comparison to the PC version.

Two, most field-specific software is PC based and so unless you child can set up a dual-boot system, they are either going be to forced into doing this work in their computer lab (of available) or using VMWare (if offered). If not they are now going to be the at the mercy of their classmates.

Three, Macbooks/Ipads are an easy target to be stolen on college campuses. Its a signal of wealth that can easily be cracked.

Just guy a PC clone off of Dell Outlet with 16 GB of ram and go from there.
