IF this actually happened, the flag or DTOM flag is optional and not a prescribed part of the uniform.
She was not "out of uniform". Maybe she just didn't like a Coastie accosting her randomly in public about uniform issues?

A lot of guys serving in Vietnam were drafted and didn't want to be there but if the option was jail or being a fugitive in Canada most guys served. I'm willing to bet a lot of Vietnam vets feel or felt the way she does. My dad and lots of men of his generation who are Vietnam Era vets served and never felt the need to be super patriotic and broadcast their veteran status. Hell, I don't think my dad ever flew the American flag ever or even had any piece of patriotic clothing and he has Vietnam Veteran on his grave marker.
We have a volunteer, professional army. People join for professional reasons mostly and not to be Mr or Ms Red, White, and Blue.

My dad as well. I think Viet Nam really turned a lot of those guys off from the US govt getting them involved in such a bullshite war (they basically had no choice but to go) with so much American bloodshed.
