Funny how they only have an estimate with a huge range of possible flu deaths, but are able to keep an exact tracker of Covid deaths
If by "funny" you mean "completely logical and expected", then sure.

Because flu tracking is done by statistical approximation, even without COVID it takes years of analysis before they close the book.

This year will take longer than most because we tested for flu at a far higher rate this year than normal trying to discriminate for COVID

As for the reason there is an exact number: it’s prob because of how the coding system works. Flu is typically ambiguous and not uniform in reporting. As a result most epidemiological measures don’t even say flu in their analysis, but rather influenza like illness. (ILI).

In contrast, ~86% of all of the reported COVID-19 death certificates were coded U07.1, which means lab confirmed presence of virus.

The confirmed presence of the virus shouldn't land someone on the death toll. Only if its the cause of death.

Sorry for not being clear.

That coding goes on cause of death. It’s not an automatic addition just for a positive test. It’s up to the judgement of the doctor/coroner.

My point was the high percentage that had lab confirmed COVID was related why it’s easier to pin an exact number.

As opposed to U07.2, which is death due to presumed positive COVID(and the associated statistics like with ILI)
