I expect them to be available when I need them, polite, attentive, my food to be on time, my drink to stay full, and my seat to be in a comfortable location. I'm sure there are other things, but that's the majority.
Most of this is perfectly reasonable. How does their general attention to other guests negatively impact any of that?

You should reflect on that.
You are killing me. I'm seriously dying over here with this crap. I have the money. I have no reason to conform. Their job is there to provide a service. The tip is bonus based on the quality of their service.
You're trying to flip the entire process and it's hilarious.

Depends on how much general attention.

You should reflect on that. It would bother me to know that I was the guy nobody liked to serve, or that I was the guy the wait staff begged the host to not sit in their section.
Basically this. Besides the fact that it is embarrassing, which is why I earlier mentioned dates, but on a real level...
Think about your fellow human, dude. How can you honestly behave that way towards majority good hearted human beings? I just don't get it. People in your day to day remind you of how good the world still is despite stupid Twitter and shite... but some people want to dick them over in person.
Squidward, I really hope that despite your disposition here, you reflect on this soon when you get in bed.
Well I know that won't happen. But next time you close out a tab. If we at least help that, it is a win.

You can stop lecturing me. I'm not interested. Try to keep things in a little better perspective. The entire argument about mandatory tipping is that these people are owed something regardless of their effort. No.

Well, of course. But if your needs are taken care of, why is this a thing?

Nobody is saying that, I don’t think.

You are when you demand a tip in all cases.

Definitely not. I've (two times since I was 18 -- I'm 30) had rude service. And I acted accordingly.
But to preach about it online implies it is a regular thing you need to justify. Its just not cool.
I would 100000% be down for the US doing away with tipping, increasing food/drink prices by 20% across the board, and paying servers 20% of sales....
But sadly, that hasn't happened.
The non-tippers will bitch when their $12 burger becomes $14.40.. and especially $50 filet at Ruth's becomes $60.

I think they should be paid based on the market, regardless.

I can count on one hand the number of times in my life my service has warranted a poor tip (less than 15%). If you find that you experience this often, it's likely due to impossible or unreasonable expectations you have of hospitality workers. Or you're just cheap, but it would be probably be easier to just own that.

Hey, I don't disagree. I'd love to see 20% of sales to all servers. Won't happen at current profit margins, but I'm happy to pay more for no tip! Saves me money

That's all well and good, but you also know that they aren't and won't be regardless of your personal crusade against tipping.

Do you believe your money comes from different pockets? Because the price of your food is whatever is on the bill and whatever you tip, regardless.

I understand you don't understand the market.

I do understand the market. An atypical non-conforming a-hole that doesn't tip is not going to swing the pendulum of the market. It just makes the a-hole an a-hole

Yes, it will. Slightly.
I find it bizarre you people keep after me about conforming as well. Who are you to tell me how to spend my money?
Who knows, maybe we'll establish a new norm of non-gratuity? That's sort of how norms work.

Ok well I tried to be relatable and nice enough, but now you're full tardlet. Goodnight, Mr No Tip sir.
And good luck to you with service going forward with that T-U-D-E.
