The British accent is contrived.
Yep, just like the Transatlantic accent that people spoke here in the U.S. in the 30's and 40's. It was taught to people at elite boarding schools and made it's way into the movies/TV. I am sure that's how the "received pronunciation" accent spread around England in the 1800's.
One way we know that English people used to pronounce all R's like Americans is because of text. Words wouldn't have R's in them if they weren't at one time pronounced.

I'm no linguist, but I'm pretty sure Brits always sounded like Brits, and I'm pretty sure early Americans sounded like Brits as well.
My thought is Americans started sounded like Americans because of our melting pot society, and it developed over the years.

Cool video. I watch a lot of British shows and i can tell the difference between upper class and lower class London accents just from that. I like trying to identify where Americans are from by regional accents, too.

We're all going to sound like we're from fricking Ohio within a couple more generations.
As long as we don’t all sound like Californians I can rest easy.

This was interesting and kind of in a roundabout way why Australians speak as they do. I have always felt like I can understand Australians easier than the English.
