My dad did. He enlisted in 1967 because he was sure he was going to be drafted and sent to Vietnam. He tried to get his cousin to enlist with him. He didn’t and was drafted. When he reported they had a large group of draftees. All lined up. He said that the officer or sergeant in charge showed up and said that the USMC needed marines and who in this group would volunteer to be a marine. Said he needed 4 volunteers. Nobody raised their hand. He asked again and nobody volunteered. After that, he started at one end and walked the line randomly picking 4 saying “you are now a marine.” My dad’s cousin Perry was one of the four. He lived through it and is still alive. Have heard him tell that story a few times over the years and the way he tells it is funny.
