Developing allergies later in life

My daughter (Soph at Indiana U) had a reaction to BBQ shrimp on Christmas Eve. I had to take her to the ER. Her lips swoll so big it was hard to look at her without laughing (laughing didn't help the situation). They gave her steroid and antihistimine shots which worked.
She sees an alergist today and he says she is allergic to all shell fish. She has eaten shrimp since she was a year old with no reaction. How does allergies like this pop up late in life? She had a basket of fried shrimp this Summer while we were in Laffy town visiting the family. She had no reaction.

I'm no expert, but I've grown out of some and into others. Wish I knew how to stop it.

He said what the other poster said.. Sometimes you grow in and out of them. Seemed like a BS answer.

I developed allergies around 24, I attribute it a pos corpsman that never logged My flu shot for like 6 months and subsequently causing me to get one like 6 months in a row. Went to an allergist and got injections for like 2 or 3 years and just quit going. Nothing got better. I have very very mild allergies, just itching and a zyrtec every now and the takes care of it. It was bad at first though. I think the injections helped, but the they started giving me them for things they said I was allergic to, but I never noticed so I quit.

im 31... when ate crawfish shrimp and all seafood my whole life. When i was 24 i ate some lobster and steak and was about to go to a ball tournament. Within 10mins of eating i was sweating like crazy, and could barely breath. Lucky i was close to a clinic, weny in and got an epi shot and steroid. Went to allergist next week and yep was allergic to shellfish. It has totally changed my life... the thing about it, each time it gets worse from here on out because of exposure. Your daughter was lucky it was on the outside, thats good! But next time it could be her tongue/throat and if there isnt epi available fast.. it gets dangerous quick. I now carry 2 epi pens with me. My dr said i am already so allergic to shellfish to be 100% sure when i eat somewhere they they dont cook seafood on grill i eat my steak or burger, or fry anything in same grease.. or even reach over my food and some drop on it. Cross contamination is when people usually have reactions. I rarely eat places now that i dont "trust" because i dont want to gamble with my life. Make sure she gets epi pens and carries them.

I was in my mid 40s when I first had an extremely violent allergic reaction to a horse. I had had many encounters with horses as a youth and young adult with no ill effects.
ETA: Just to clarify: I was not eating horse, just touching them, and breathing horse dander.

same thing happened to one of my hunting buddies...he ate shellfish his whole life without a problem and suddenly he has major allergies to them...apparently, it it not that uncommon for allergies to just show up one day...

I have developed allergies over the years or so I think - to grass or maybe dust etc. everytime I cut the grass the sneezes etc start. I have friend that have developed allergies to shrimp, crawfish later on in life so I agree with your analysis.

I grew up on the middle of the country and now I'm alergic to some tree pollen and grasses. Strange very strange. Since I was in and around them my entire childhood.

I developed some type of allergy in my 40's...it's in the air/plant related...I've never gotten tested to find out exactly what it is...it only affects me for a week...Zrtyec takes care of it...

I developed allergies to some things when I was around 20. Couldn't figure out why I was getting sick all the time. Got allergy tested and ended up being allergic to multiple things

Never had allergies except very mild one to shellfish. But now I'm also allergic to Costco wild salmon. Give me any other salmon and I'm fine

Yes sir!
Having others tell their stories makes me understand this is fairly common. It was the first I had heard of it. She was prescribed an EPI pen. Thank you to the poster who recommended that and watching for cross contamination in restaurants

It definitely happens- my wife's best friend cooked a shrimp and corn soup for dinner for us about 5-6 years ago. We all ate it that night and enjoyed it. She (the friend) heated up the leftovers 1-2 days later and her throat closed up. That was the first I had heard of it, but I keep hearing more and more stories about it. Luckily for her, I think hers was just shrimp and not all shellfish. I couldn't imagine knowing the goodness of fresh boiled shrimp and not being able to eat them anymore

Same here. It's frustrating as hell. As I get older it seems to get worse too.
