Only the diehards seemed to make it to The Collegiates. Back in the day, we'd hike Princeton/Yale and then hit the hot springs for free . Lots of characters living in St Elmo, that's for sure, lol.
I would caution the OP that it might be wise to get your flatlander legs/lungs under you, before going anywhere near a 14er. I'd start by driving to Chataqua in Boulder, getting a map at the trailhead, and going up a trail like the 2nd Flatiron . You get a great visual of The Front Range over 2500-3000 vertical feet and you can guage what kind of shape you are in. Don't go anywhere near Long's Peak or some bigger ones until you have mountain-confidence.

Yeah, you can rent and I definitely would so you have a nice full suspension bike. I do more biking further west in Fruita and Moab than Colorado, but there are still some good trails around Golden and Boulder. Download mountain bike project on your smartphone or check out the website and familiarize yourself with it

Flagstaff Mountain in Boulder and Lookout Mountain in Golden are both very nice, and not quite the altitude as some of the others mentioned (6,983 and 7,377 respectively) so you could start getting acclimated to the elevation before attacking a 14er.
Go to Rocky Mountain National Park.
If you are there in late July/early August make the trip up to Cheyenne for Frontier Days. Really cool, and the rodeo is a blast to check out. Also, go up into the Snowy Range (northern tip of the Medicine Bow mountains). Take Wyoming 130 west from Laramie to Centennial and then up into the Snowies. Beautiful scenery with lakes and such.

Flagstaff is a great place for a road ride if you are already a beast. If not head a half mile north and go in at Sunshine Canyon (Mt Sanitas). For some dirt trails I also liked Eldorado Canyon ten miles or so South. That area by the tunnel is cool (Rattlesnake Canyon) and if you are lucky The Zephyr will come by (Chicago to San Fran).
