To tell the truth, I envy visual artists. With brushstrokes And lines and paint and color you can capture so much in something that is just…there. A piece of art, you can look at it and touch it and it wordless speaks volumes.

I’ve got a friend that is an amazing woodworker, he took the shavings from a piece he was working on and set them in epoxy.



He tells me “they’re just shavings. They’re light and harmless.


And he turns them on the lathe, it’s amazing to watch him. What to him is just…natural, flowing motion, what he does almost from muscle memory, nothing to him really…
But to me, every stroke is muscle and time and pain and struggle. It’s beauty, it’s a thousand words I can’t even muster.

And it produces this


You can hold it and touch it and admire it and every polished curve, every curl is a statement, an emotion. Captured in time.


With words…

It takes work to consume it. To parse out the rhythm and the emotion and the message.

You look at art and see unspoken beauty.

But a piece of poetry or prose…Another brick of text in an endless wall.

And no one admires a brick.

You have written ageless poems the OT loves- an odd collection of many different people- not a bad wall to have your name in.

Au contraire . My heart hurt for this one.

I hate what is happening to young girls. They are fed this poison, this perverse sexualization from such a young age. So many without fathers to protect them, to guard their innocence while they can.

And as a father of a little girl who won’t be so little so much longer, I know all too well what waits. And I am terrified.

I was at a tailgate last weekend, having a grand time, and as I talked to other fathers there, with daughters not all that much older than mine, we commiserated. How they are so sweet and steal your heart and you’d give them everything…


But, they grow, and become women. And they bud and change and there isn’t a damn thing we can do to stop it. You rage and gnash against the inevitable because we were not so long ago there. We know what men are and what women are and how awful it all can be.

Because we can’t save them. We can only raise them, and offer them guidance and teach them their worth is more than their tits. And how we are all hypocrites fighting against titillation and degradation.

We may all be sinners in secret but that doesn’t mean we should spread it and sensationalize it and make it something to be celebrated.

We are broken people in a broken world and what’s wrong with wanting them to hold on to innocence just a little longer?

Being broken doesn’t mean we should seek to break others to bring them down.

There is evil in this world, and few are free of rot. But instead of seeing our spots and surrendering ourselves to corruption, we can cut the spots out, and save what is good.

Don’t you remember your grandma making an apple pie? Sure, some had bruises. But mine would cut out the bad spots, use the good, and make a pie so sweet and crisp your grandpa would ask for seconds.

At some point, we have to decide whether to surrender to the rot of the world, to bend the knee to our bruises and let the whole barrel be spoiled, or to cut out the rot and make a proper pie.

I’m flattered. The OT never ceases to amaze me. Some of my historical pieces I put time and effort and research into get all the reception of a wet fart in a prom dress, and something I wrote while driving around working has posters sharing it with their spouses.

I’m humbled.
