If you worked the transportation company for a bit do you think you could branch off and start your own with your experience from both jobs?

I don't mean this to sound as harsh as it might come across, but if you are late 30's with a business degree, you need to be focused on building a career, not a job. This transportation side gig does not sound like a career opportunity in any way. I'm not sure the HR job is much better, but your alternative plan sounds worse.

The transportation company I could easily just say "hey I'm sorry but I can't work this week".

Like I say, this mentality isn't going to build a career for you. You want to be developing an irreplaceable skillset right now.

If they want you more negotiate for better pay.

At the same time try to negotiate for better pay at the corporate job.

If neither or satisfactory I bet competitors for both will give you 20-30% more to do similar jobs.

My advice, shop around!

I'm in my late 30s and I flat out make more with the transportation company but obviously that would always be contract work. I'm sure I could discuss it with them but I seriously doubt there would be any room for PTO or medical benefits and I definitely know there wouldn't be a 401(k) option.

Dont get caught up in hourly rate. The bottom line is always total compensation including benefits. If you jump ship and have to pay more for healthcare or lose retirement funding then you have missed the key to the American dream.

Sometimes you also have to look at the 'down the road" picture. Either job may be more lucrative a few yrs from now if promotion or other job growth is in the forecast.

Sounds like 401k, PTO, health care is the better option at 30.

I have 4 years military, 5 years trade school and grinded non stop for 20 years at jobs I hated just to give my kids a better option than myself. Fast forward, it was completely worth it. I just got a federal job that is a dream come true.

I guess my suggestion is…if you plan to have a family in the future pick the one that will provide the most for your children and break a cycle of working jobs like that.

If you plan on being single then just pick the job that makes you the happiest and the least stressful.

As I see it, you go for cash when you are under 40 to get a start in life. From 40 years of age however, you have to start thinking and valuing benefits more because that’s when your health typically goes to shite. You are also 25 years out from retirement, so you need to start saving all you can because that 25 years will pass very quickly. You are right at 40, so I wouldn’t let go of the HR job. If you and they are agreeable, you can stick with the transportation job too, but that one needs to be secondary.

If you a working with a big corporation now is there a chance you can transfer and get a promotion? Not many companies match 8 percent any longer. Also, I assume you are vested in the retirement already? Don’t be too embarrassed at 20 per hour, you have very good benefits!
