Decided to run a little experiment today regarding the demographics of kumon

If you don't know what kumon is, it's a place to send your kids for academic help and refinement outside of regular school. Well, the little place I was eating at tonight had an outside area and there was one of these kumons right next door.

The area in which I live is white, Hispanic, and the little bit left after those two is Asian/Indian. Very few blacks. I started to mentally count the ethnic makeup of folks who send their kids to this place.

over HALF of the kids/parents walking in and out of this place were of subcontinental Indian or East Asian heritage, despite this group making up at most 15% of the population of the surrounding neighborhoods.

The Hispanic presence at this kumon was non-existent, despite these people being by far the most common minority ethnic group in the area.

And this was in a shopping center that is at a crossroads of both poor and better off neighborhoods. The ethnic makeup of the children and parents making up the customer base of this learning center should have been reflective of the ethnic makeup of the area in general.

It was not.

Culture matters.
