Don’t you have to prove beyond all reasonable doubt that the crime happened? With just words… how do you accomplish that?
Depending on who your eyewitnesses are, I think it can be done. But I'm with you, it's pretty dicey.

find it troubling that someone can be convicted of rape based solely on testimony
This should trouble everyone but it happens all the time. The flimsiest accusation will get a man arrested and a decent story will get him convicted.

are they leaving something out of the these articles? Very weird.
All of these articles are very light on details but allegedly there was a $400k hush-money payout to one of the victims and the scientologists killed the other's dog/pet but I couldn't find an article with that information, only from what has been shared in this thread.

Largely testimony. The lack of rape kits and the like are due to this: quote: The women blamed the church for their hesitancy in going to police about Masterson. They testified that when they reported him to Scientology officials, they were told they were not raped, were put through ethics programs themselves, and were warned against going to law enforcement to report a member of such high standing. AP article on conviction
I hope they go after the “church” too. They equally deserve 30 years to life in prison.

The Scientology angle makes it a really interesting Netflix documentary in the making.

Wish he could get a refund.

This might make a decent documentary in the future, with Weinstein there was a lot of evidence that he was doing those things even after the years has passed but with Masterson it was seemingly all testimony.
I would like to know what changed for the prosecutors between the previous trial which was ruled a "mistrial" and this second trial which succesully landed two out three convictions. Was the $400k not brought up in the first trial, what about the involvement of the Scientologists in covering up the rapes and killing one of the victim's dogs. Was the drugging of the victims also not brought up in the first trial and what changed the judge's mind to allow the prosecutors to use the drugging as a fact against the defense?

I doubt Masterson does even 5 years. He will probably get the Bill Cosby early release special.

I don't understand how this went to trial. The statute of limitations had passed. They changed the law, but that shouldn't have mattered in this case. It's too old. It should all be reversed on those grounds..

THAT dude will be in his 70’S before he SHOWs his face in public again.

So he should be a free man on a technicality?

I see what you were going for here, but maybe just leave the funny to others.

Yes. There was "technically" no evidence.

SOL aren't a technicality. They were established for a reason. You can't get a fair trial if they wait too long. He didn't get a fair trial. It's BS..

Don’t drop the soap, Danny.
Good riddance rapist POS.

Why can’t he get a fair trial? At least one of the Jane Does filed a police report in 2004. There were at least 5 accusers. Masterson didn’t testify. Apparently a jury found him guilty beyond reasonable doubt on 2 of the charges.
If there was a statute of limitations that applied here, he’d be free. The fact that he’s not suggests there was no SOL issue.

He might get a new trial on appeal, but he isn't America's dad like Cosby. Don't see him getting any favors.

She waited 16 years to follow up?

Don't care. Only charged with 3. He doesn't have to testify. Not on him to prove innocence. On the state to prove guilt.

Another couldn't and there was a mistrial. Verdicts get overturned all the time.

There was a hearing. The state stated that SOL did not apply cause he kidnapped and used violence to rape the women. Also hinted he drugged them.
There is going to be an appeal and this will be one of the central issues that is brought up, from what I am reading. It just should have never happened..
