Jackson over Chattanooga? Who made this list? Was it that shirtless bong-ripping guy in Urban Meyer's RV?

Objectively speaking, cities are ranked according to demographics. The more dangerous minorities the worse the city
Then, objectively speaking, how is Detroit anywhere on this list, much less #55?

I like Dallas better than Houston, but this study has it behind it. Pretty ballsy to come with an article that gives the concrete jungle of the Republic more clout.
I do too, but I'm sure Houston scores really highly in some metrics. I know more about Dallas than Houston, but I'm guessing Houston's dining and beer scene is far superior.
Dallas is much more aesthetically pleasing than Houston and the climate is better, but I'm guessing that's not a big part of the measurement. But things like that obviously have a big impact on personal perceptions of a place.

Why? Have you not been watching the news lately? I’d rather live in Portland than New York at this point.
Who are you people
You could easily spend a month in Manhattan and avoid seeing any looting, violence, etc.

If some higher power could come down from the mountain and give us the real ranking Detroit would be really fricking low.

It breaks down the criteria by category, explains it's the definition, then provides the source(s) used to rank it.
Right, it has a pretty clear methodology, but it's also one that's subjective.
Right off the bat, their first criteria point is "weather" which they score as average number of sunny days. Sunny days aren't all made equal, of course. A sunny day in the south in August isn't exactly pleasant weather.
It's kind of hard to argue with their "product" area, but obviously depending on work and travel lifestyle airport connectivity is a relative priority. Same thing with professional sports teams as opposed to college sports.
Foreign-born residents is a scored category... I understand that diversity is worthwhile but why does it really matter if they are foreign-born or first or second generation?
And unless I missed it, none of these criteria are weighted at all, whereas any individual would obviously consider some categories far more important than others.
All of that said, it's entertaining to read and debate, and they are getting their website clicks.

I live in DC. 5th feels a bit high. You starve in this town if you don't make 60k minimum. Social mobility is also harder than it looks in DC.
Annapolis is a way better city than Balitmore.
Savannah is way better to raise a family in than ATL.
Second cities/midsize cities often do things better than the major ones from my experience.

My guess is he lives in BFE Mississippi and his only knowledge of New York is what he sees on Fox News.

I gotta hear this
Savannah has its charms, it also has a huge amount of pure shite. I think it'd be fun to raise a family in Savannah if you had the right setup, but I'm not sure how you're objectively putting it ahead of Atlanta - which obviously provides a ton more options.

I've said it on this site many times. Annapolis is one of the most underrated places in the country. Such a hidden gem.

People feel like it's their political obligation to not give any credit to NY or SF or whatever.
It's not like acknowledging the features of America's premier city for over a century means you're endorsing De Blasio. One can admit these are premier areas while noting they have huge, self-inflicted issues to deal with.

I haven't been to SF in 20 years, but New York is an awesome city. One of my favorite places to visit and I wouldn't even mind living there at some point.

SF is still awesome too. I was there last year and I’ll be there this weekend.

I have always looked at Dallas as a great place to live/work. It does nothing exceptional, but has great location.

But...but...but...liberals and poop in the streets! I read about that on the internet so I know San Francisco is the worst place on the planet!
Posted on 8/12/20 at 9:36 am to JoeHackett
I honestly think Birmingham is a little bit low. I like it a lot better than the other crap you find between Atlanta and Dallas.

I agree, although the location is a big part of why I don't want to live in Dallas.
It does offer better proximity to the west via quick flights.

A San Francisco / Napa & Sonoma trip is very high on my list.
