They still have time to come to an agreement.

I was just there yesterday.
I could’ve been me.
I could’ve been me.

Well, this is right in line with Costco's DEI position, so they should be all for a union shop.

The union says "fair wages and benefits" are the catalyst for the strike. According to the union, the wholesale giant recently reported $254 billion in annual revenue and $7.4 billion in net profits
$7.4b on $254b is less then 3% profit. The is a shitty return. Especially when you look at previous investments.

The Teamsters covered by the Costco national contract make up 8% of the 219,000 U.S. employees that the company has at 616 U.S. stores
Only 8% are unionized. Likely in blue metro areas.
Edit: $7.4b/219k employees is $33,800 each. Giving them each $5/hr raise would take over 1/3 of all profits.

Would imagine most of the Costco locations in the south are not unionized
They aren’t. It’s 18,000 out of like 210,000 employees. So not even 10% of their work force.
Edit: It’s 56 of their 616 stores.

In that case, can they fire them?

Lol authorization doesn't mean much. Almost every union authorizes a strike when contract negotiations start.

I kind of thought they paid pretty well and offered benefits to a lot of their people.
They do. This may be a classic case of the union killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

Just an fyi for some of you young folks and older. When you go on strike, what you have really done is voluntarily given up your job/quit. The company does not have to take you back.

My membership expired yesterday, jokes on them

Yeah but if you have a special skill set, like a Costco worker for example, you’re golden. Not like you or I could ever acquire the skills to work there.

Bring back the pretzel gosh dang it!
Sam's kills Costco in the food court department. The costco food offerings beside the hotdog are terrible and overpriced. A cold turkey sandwich for $7 and a $3 dollar terrible chocolate chip cookie.

What exactly is it that they want? I read through a few press releases and all it says is "higher pay." I can't find specifics.

No entire stores are unionized. They don’t have stores were only a portion are unionized and the rest are not.
There are also very specific rules when dealing with unions. And unfortunately I don’t think “just firing them” is allowed.

Giving a final offer and hiring replacements if refused is absolutely allowed.
