Core charge for a battery is absurd
No it is an environmental fee because lazy fricks tend to leave them laying around or throw them in the normal trash and they contain sulfuric acid and lead. This is one env law that is very effective.

If it keeps them from being thrown in lakes or rivers it’s worth it to me.

The batteries go back to the Distribution Center (AutoZone, Advance, etc). They are processed in the Returns/Recall department. They are palletized, weighed, and shipped to a recycling plant. Used batteries are shite and a pain in the arse to deal with and process.

You, have no idea what you’re talking about. The core charge is charged to the retailer when they buy the battery and they only pass that cost on to the buyer with no markup. You return or exchange your core, the retailer makes 0 profit off the core. As a matter of fact, we would prefer you pay the core charge and keep your damn core. We have to do a metric ton of paperwork to return cores. So, in closing, frick you.

This is the correct answer.

I work in the aftermarket and have worked on bumping up the core return rate. Our primarily concern is certainly an environmental one. That being said the paperwork and accounting side is not fun, especially in this inflationary environment. It’s also incredible there are states (looking at you New York) that cap core retail. There’s a direct correlation with states that cap the core retail and low core returns.
