My dad had a pension from Boise Southern. They are no longer around so thankfully he had a 401K from another job when he died that my mom can draw.

My boomer mom worked to make ends meet. We were a pretty average family of 5. One job would have been a stretch.

But the real problem is all the things I didn't spend money on because they weren't available:

video games - Instead they were spending money to participate in bowling leagues as adults and other social events (like Supper Clubs).

piercings - Majority of the American population doesn't have so many piercings that it costs more than a one time pop of $50-ish bucks

tats (trashy) - Same as above

cell phones - We've traded land lines for these and they're essential at this point.

streaming services - I'll give you that.

Uber - A lot of the younger folks I know who use ride share services is because they can't afford a $15-$20k car/car insurance and their area doesn't have reliable public transportation.

delivered meals, frequent eating out - Likely due to more women having work full-time to sustain a household. 60s and 70s, you could have a Mom stay home all day and cook 7 days a week.

internet service - Today is an essential.

The outlier is driving, the cost of going one mile is less than half of what it was, adjusting for inflation.

You’re a dense fricker. Not only is the house you used an example 15% lower than the number I used, it’s objectively in a shitty area ghetto adjacent directly contrary to what you said.

Where do you live? The difference between a desirable area and an area you think is trashy can often be less than a few streets.

I saw the same thing living in L.A. or when I drive through parts of Baton Rouge, NOLA, etc

Again, using Moss Bluff as an example, there have been expensive subdivisions developed right next to trashy mobile home parks. That doesn't mean the subdivision is undesirable.

I guess our definitions of what is truly ghetto is different. Trap houses and section 8 all over is what I see as ghetto. Not some older part of town that is still full of working-class people.

BTW, you said $225K. Just reminding you again since you skipped that part in your reply.

Don't bother showing them a house that is affordable. It will never be good enough for these snowflakes.

Part of the real answer is corporations should quit buying up housing and property and driving the costs up.

Stop drinking coffee and you can buy a house? Probably not.

Not what I see

The first one I posted 712 Westwind Dr for $233K

The second one 417 Hudson Rd for $215K

Why are you scrolling way away from the street they are located on to try to claim they are in the ghetto? To win an internet argument, you resort to twisting the truth?

Those are both normal neighborhoods they are in.

Oh so you admit you scrolled out of the area until you got the desired outcome, ignoring the fact that the neighborhoods those houses are in are decent areas and in the price range you came up with. Thanks

I used your quoted price range and proved you can buy a house in that range not in a ghetto even in Alexandria, LA. I win

Ah yes...when proven wrong, assume your opponent is just a dumb poor idiot by making personal attacks based on nothing.

No, you don't understand! When you have to drive miles down the road to find bad houses, that means everything within a 5-mile radius is also bad and undesirable, even for first-time home buyers!

Bro, if you are 3 minutes away from every side of your home from being around run down trailers and trap houses, you aren’t in a “decent” area.

Somebody built an almost guaranteed poorly constructed house in a shite area, just because the next door neighbors aren’t complete shite, doesn’t mean you aren’t in a shite area.

And the original premise is you think that should be the AVERAGE starter home. I don’t think the AVERAGE 28 year old engineer and nurse married couple should have to live surrounded by people on disability and no water

I wouldn’t let my 3rd cousin live in that area, much less my kids and neither would you

800 meters to get to a trailer that’s falling apart with a bunch of shite piled in the yard. About a mile to the dilapidated house
