Yep. I may get on year round if I keep on it. I am friends with someone in HR who knows how to get me on. Otherwise I will be done here in October.

I'd get on the ball then.

In all seriousness, how is the women and social life with a park ranger position? I've always wondered this. Are you allowed to leave the park grounds for personal and leisure reasons? They provide you with housing on the park, right?

The only shitty thing with seasonal positions is 1039. I can't work more than that many hours in a seasonal position with the DOI in a single year. But if I find something permanent year round, I am eligible for anything. A buddy of mine I worked with back home is here too with the NPS and he may end up in Washington state in a month or so with USFS and he's banking on getting it so he can be a DOI employee permanently, basically skipping the 1039 deal. Lucky arse!

All employees can leave when they aren't "on the clock" (we don't actually clock in). Housing is provided if you want it, located behind headquarters in West Glacier. I'm not sure where housing is on the east side of the park... probably near St Mary Lake. I live in Whitefish and commute.

But according to your profile you live in Baton Rouge. I'm pretty sure I am a much happier person than you living in one of the most pristine places on earth. BR is a poor, blight infested crime ridden ghetto with a corrupt form of government. I'll be glad to make 4x less than you under those circumstances.

to you and I hope you're happy. And next time you spend thousands to send your family here, I'll be thinking of ya.

Dude we get it. You have a great job. I'd love to have it. But now you're acting like an a-hole

No, he's an a-hole for bringing up money. If I wanted to be rich monetarily, I wouldn't be working here. But this is my dream job. Money or not, happiness equals quality of life. And money is the root of all evil.

Money is not the root of all evil. The love of money is the root of all evil.

Well I'll be damn

I'm glad I'm in love with my job and not my paycheck.

On another note, if you all need advice on bringing your family here I'm all ears. I will be happy to inform y'all on some things about this incredible place.

I remember being 20 years old too and thinking I would never want to get married or have kids and that I didn't give two shits about money.

You'll grow up one day too...enjoy Montana while you're there, but get off your high horse about being a seasonal park ranger while you're at it.

Most people live their own dream and everyone has a different barometer of happiness.

I wouldn't take your job for $5mill a year, but the scenery is stunning and I'm sure it is a fantastic opportunity. No point in trying to convince each other who is living the better dream as it is completely opinion and personal goal oriented.

I've moved my family three times with my company in the past five years and most tell me I'm crazy but it's what you do when you chase "it". For you it's open spaces, the wilderness and adventure, for me it's something different yet equally satisfying.

Rome wasn't built in a day. I may be in my twenties but I have a great opportunity with my 'seasonal' position. I'm sure you all became CEOs of Fortune 500 companies right out of college.

Like the corporate ladder, I intend on working my way up. Keep laughing, but my goal is to become a superintendent one day.

You're exactly right. I think I jumped the gun. His dream is making lots of money and living in (alleged) pure stress. Mine? Not so much. But we all have, like you said, different opinions. But dont get defensive about money when I'm obviously not working here to be rich. I'm not poor. I make a good wage. And I couldn't be happier. So yea, I'll just shut up, enjoy the view and interpret science to the public.

I'll be there in 4 weeks with family, including 4 kids ages 14, 14, 13, 11. Staying just outside of Whitefish. First timers. Any trip advice is appreciated, especially pertaining to your office - which is much more stunning than mine.
