The News says 30,000 homes damaged in Houston

A friend is a regional sales manager at a building materials distributor with a large presence in Texas. He said that they received some numbers from their national headquarters that they are estimating 200,000 damaged homes because of Harvey.

That number was the number of people in shelters. In Houston, insurers are expecting 300 to 400 thousand claims from Houston. But then you start including Corpus, Rockport and now Beaumont/ Port Arthur....which is experiencing catastrophic flooding and the number of homes damaged is going to be pretty high.

These were just some of the numbers that the news was reporting and they didn't make sense. One station said 300,000 cars lost and another said 500,000.

They just take random numbers and run with them.

However... Katrina would have been just an average Hurricane had the levees not broke.......

I think it is dumb to compare damage in natural disasters but you are plain wrong on the average part.

Katrina was one of the most intense storms on record and had 175mph sustained winds the day before it hit southeastern Louisiana. It was also a huge storm pushing a 15-20+ft storm surge. They measured the storm surge in Empire, LA where the eye first hit at 22 ft and Mississippi dealt with 20 foot storm surges also. It's a huge reason why the levees broke in New Orleans/St Bernard.
