That really needs to be the next big goal for the area's flood protection.

Darlington Reservoir, other projects under consideration as Corps begins new flood study

Early options under consideration involve dredging such waterways as the Amite River, Blind River, Bayou Manchac and Colyell Creek, according to a Corps report.

The Corps will also weigh the installation of the Darlington Reservoir to hold water around the East Feliciana and St. Helena Parish line. The plan was once at the forefront of flood control efforts. It fell out of favor but interest has rebounded since the 2016 flood.

Another possibility Creel discussed was to put a chain of smaller retention ponds along the Amite, possibly on the sites of former gravel mines.

Louisiana takes 30 years to dig a ditch, thanks to environmental red tape

It was funding issues. There's been suits by Central for a tax refund, and all kinds of other stuff like that.

How can someone start a topic on a subject and in the very first sentence show they really don't know anything about the subject they're talking about?

Tigerdroppings, lol.

All that started after that huge flood in the very early 80s. I grew up within spitting distance of Darlington, and that issue was not a popular one in that are. The land owners didn't much like the idea of the gov't taking their land.

Is this ever the case?

I mean, who wants to sell their land to build a freeway? If it didn't happen, we wouldn't have infrastructure. It's a necessary evil.

Don’t kid yourself, it’s the same or worse in Texas, here developers Can build INSIDE retention ponds with impunity.

What is the chance that this destroys the state and causes erosion or environmental damage?

It only took 40 years to break ground, anyone think this is completed in 2 years?

I remember flood of 81 or 82.
We were riding in a bateau down my friends street setting trot lines between his parents house and his neighbors house. We caught 15 catfish and a huge buzz from the old Milwaukee beer.

When the water went down his parents had 23 common water snakes hanging right between the kitchen door and broken storm door.

Oh, yeah I remember the Darlington ruffling feathers from landowners etc. Army Corp studied it and supposedly the soil not stable enough to do it. It would have been a nice thing to have had built. To make everything work you would need both the Comite Diversion Canal and Darlington Reservior to control water flowing South to Central and the BR area.

Just do not think I will ever see it in my lifetime.

Yay, let's continue to straighten and dredge every natural waterway in the state so we can continue to overdevelope onto flood plains. Cause you know frick proper planning or responsible development.
