I have one of these and want to use the gas. I bought the home recently and want to make sure I burn it correctly. What do I need to do prep work wise? How do I use the gas?

There should be a valve off to the side where you turn it on and off. Just turn it on low and light it.

Use the gas for lighting the wood on fire. Then turn it off.

Not sure I have ever seen an actual combo gas/wood fireplace. If you have a an empty grate for wood with a burner underneath, that is likely a gas starter for your wood-burning fireplace. You just light up the gas burner and once lit pile wood on the grate. Once the fire is lit, turn the gas off.

ETA: What crimson said above...
