One of my favorite gifts from high school was a custom ink pen. I believe it took Cross refills. It was Purpleheart wood, since I was planning on attending LSU (the guy would get them in the color of the university that whoever he bought it for was planning on attending), and my name and graduation year were engraved on it. I don't think it was a particularly expensive, but it was very thoughtful and lasted me a long time (I seem to have misplaced it in my most recent move and am none too happy about it). It makes a great pen to keep at or on display at a desk at work. That alone, or paired with a pen holder (either with a clock, nameplate, or just any particularly cool base) would be something that I think would be very cool.
