The space shuttle launch would get to about 18,000 mph.

Sound speed decreases with temperature and its pretty cold in the upper atmosphere. Mach 25 might be 19000 mph at sea level but when you see those Mach numbers in atmospheric re-entry its less than that.

The beauty of mutually assured destruction is that we would still be able to launch our counterstrikes and destroy all of China, so I don't see them using it or us using ours anytime soon.

Will be half way here before their entire country is destroyed by submarine launched hydrogen bomb laden missiles.

You do realize it would take this thing about roughly 30 minutes to make it to the US from China, right?

ETA: and what would it matter anyway. Once airborne, I don't think we'd be able to stop this one.

Am I horrible person for wanting to see the Chinese military in action? Not WMD's of course, but I'd like to see how their Air Force responds to aggression to see how legit they really are. They've been beefing up their military for 2+ decades and not my knowledge, have seen zero action.

Surely we could intercept it with something in our arsenal.

Multiple nuclear powered American submarines each armed with enough warheads to destroy all of China's major cities on station, undetectable, and all within 1000 miles of mainland China.

We would know the moment they launched from surveillance, I am presuming. A single rocket of this size, I like to believe that with a half hours warning we could use assets that are already in place be able to get it down before it crosses over the CA coast. I know the speed is incredible, and I have no real knowledge of what we possess or it's capabilities, but I struggle to think that we can't get a rocket out of the sky with a 30 minutes heads up.

The key is to intercept it BEFORE the warheads separate. Ideally, knocking it out before it ever leaves the atmosphere.

Laser ABM systems are probably out there as are other ABM systems such as:

Aegis Cruisers can fire RIM-161 Standard Missile 3
Patriot ABM batteries

My father helped design a spacebased ABM system back in the Reagan days. It was a Particle Beam Cannon but they never went beyond a "proof of concept" demonstration

Who knows if the gov't actually built and deployed it...

I don't know if we can or can't. After reading about it though, it looks like this missile's 10 MIRVs (Multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle) were designed specifically to get past our defenses. The question is, can they? There's no way to know the answer to that question and I hope we never have to find out.

I'm guessing this would be our best bet if it ever came down to it. Once it reaches terminal velocity and releases it's 10 independent warheads I think we'd have trouble knocking them all out, especially if there are multiple missiles incoming, each with 10 warheads.
