Cheesy local commercials: is that just an American thing?

I always see commercials for local car dealerships, furniture stores etc. They sometimes include kids or gimmicks. Do they have similar commercials in other countries? Trying to picture a mattress salesman in the Middle East or some stuffy British guy.
