Not when it's in a small town. If you have money your kids will play a head of better kids or if the coach has some kid of personal grudge against the parents. I have seen kids ride the bench at one school and go be a star at another.
Then I doubt those schools qualify as "major athletic schools" like I said. I'm not saying it doesn't happen anywhere. And I've seen the kids that leave a major athletic program and star at another school. Usually their new school is much smaller and in a lower division, so the quality of play isn't the same level as the major athletic school

My son had to deal with this in All Stars and park ball. Once school ball came around he was a started in 8th grade and again in high school on the 9th grade team. The high school coach told us that freshman only play on varsity if they are good enough.
So my son did not play for the varsity and wait for it ... I did not complain or say anything. My son will play JV next season and if he is good enough he will play and if not he will sit the bench.
but he goes to a public school so it maybe different

I have no problem with this. Sports teaches kids that life is not fair, success is not free or easily achieved, it takes patience and hard work.

agreed. I am not saying they're not any politics or coaches favorites but if the kid can ball he will play. if there is a kid as good as your kid and the parents have influence or the kid is a sick up to the coach. good chance he plays over your kid
same thing happens in the real world

sports, not 4th grade summer league baseball. In high schools sports at major athletic schools, coaches are paid to field the best team and win games. This coach isn't putting his arse on the line by not playing the best players
Lol. This is high school, not the NBA. Coaches don't get fired at the high school level unless they're a top program in the nation. You can bet your arse they'll take money and favors over winning any day of the week.

You really couldn't be more wrong. My brother in law has been a high school baseball coach for 17 years. His oldest son played for him as a catcher. He was good, not great and didn't start excecpt for a few games his senior year because there was a better catcher on the team. His youngest son is a freakin stud SS/2nd base and will be in 9th grade next year. Batting .700 for the last couple years in his travel league. There are a some parents that have been complaining that he will get to play varsity in 9th grade, to which they were told by my brother in law that he can if he earns it. Last week he was asked to resign, after winning his district this year, all because of a spineless AD and some whiny arse parents. This is a state champion winning baseball coach that has been at the same school for 17 years, and asked to leave because of political BS. So, yes it does happen in high school a lot more than you think.

It's more complicated than that. A coach has to win, yes. That's the bottom line. However, he also has to keep certain influential people happy. If he doesn't, when he has a down year-and everybody has a down year once in a while-the knives will come out. So it's a balance. Maybe he plays Joe Booster's kid more than the kid deserves hoping that Joe Booster will remember that during the next 4-6 season. And maybe he doesn't even do it intentionally, maybe it's part of the subconscious process.
Ruston High had a pretty good coach several years ago. Had a down season and they shitcanned him. This guy was an excellent coach. He had won a state championship at another school before coming to Ruston, and after he left Ruston he went on to a lot more success. But he had pissed off the usual suspects at Ruston, and they got rid of him at their first opportunity.
