Car roof racks

I've been driving a car for the last 2 years due to high mileage commute. We've got a Tahoe that I use to tow stuff or carry a lot. But my wife now drives that most days. I just got a new car and am tired of scheduling when I can use the Tahoe for small stuff like driving somewhere with my bike.
I know nothing about roof racks, but looking to get one for this car. What are some good ones and do they do any damage to the car's roof? I want something I can take on and off (not like every day, but if I'm not using it for 6 months)

I used to carry luggage in the roof but it killed gas mileage. At least 4-6 mpg from what i recall.

Don't want a trunk mount due to the chance of getting rear ended. My bikes aren't cheap and insurance replacement for bikes is a joke. I'd never be able to replace the bike for what the depreciated value they give me.

Just get a couple of Thule or Yakima bars and you can add whatever accessories you need.

I am clueless as of how they mount. Is it permanent? Or do they clip into the door area? Does that risk paint damage?

The mounts attach in various ways depending on the vehicle you drive. But it's as easy as tightening a screw. Not permanent and shouldn't damage the paint.

Most of the accessories I've found will attach to the base bars whether they are Thule or Yakima. I personally have Thule bars, but my bike and kayak racks are Yakima brand.
