It's an easy enough job with these engines that I'd just take care of it now. I didn't see what state they are in, but they could run into emissions issues and fail inspection if they are burning that much oil.

I've seen folks in this situation before meaning to put oil in and end up in a hurry or just simply don't keep up with checking daily; the next thing you know it gets run dry and they are buying a new engine.

Do you have a Pep Boys or Advance Auto Parts nearby? You can take it there and they run a diagnostics check and it will give them a code that tells you what area the problem is in. It can be a O2 valve that needs to be cleaned

The CX-9 with the 2.5 have a fairly common issue of failed or degraded valve stem seals. You look to be at right about the mileage and age to expect it. The most common issue associated with it, is oil consumption as it lets oil leak into the combustion chamber.

All of this is true and Mazda may have a TSB/recall out about this. They have since fixed the problem in the newer iterations of the 2.5T.

Not a huge job and should cost less than $500 to repair if it is indeed the problem.

Unfortunately, this is not. I am a service writer at an independent in New Orleans. ALLDATA, which is a reference website we use to get labor times for repair jobs among many other things, shows valve seals to be a 19.9-hour job on a 2018 CX-9.

Disclaimer: I have never seen this job done nor have I done it myself, so there may be a way to shortcut it, but broadly speaking, valve seals on any engine is a serious job that requires top-end disassembly.

You would know much better than I would about the quoted time if you have that kind of access. 19 hours seems aggressive to me, for a 4 cylinder Mazda Skyactive / Ford Duratec engine (they are the same architecture), my thinking would be 6-8 hours. But if that's what the "book" says, that's what will definitely be charged.

So maybe a $2K repair, if that's accurate.

Still not terrible in today's world.

For sure. And it definitely beats the price of a new car; especially when this one has such low mileage for it's age.
