This might belong on the outdoor board and if it does please move it.

I found some snake skin in my flower bed yesterday. It was pretty significant in size(3-4 inch diameter). I am not worried about snakes in the least, but as you can imagine my wife is freaking out. We have a very small pond(as big as a large pool), but have not seen any water moccasins yet. She is worried about the dogs running up on the snake and getting struck. I don't want my wife to kill a non-venomous snake when they actually help keep the rats away(we live on a few acres). Is there a way I can show her via the skin that the snake is not poisonous(or that it is and we need to watch the dogs closer).

Yeah go to the OB if you want actual opinions. It could be a king cobra though.

Blind people read them like braille to determine if their venomous or not

can you tell a book by it's cover?

If I find it I will kill it if she forces me. I guess I am half worried she is going to ask me to hunt down the freaking snake when we all know it will be hard to find.

If it's a good intact skin that isn't overly dried, you can usually tell if it's poisonous or not by the head shape/eye pits.

except for coral snakes

Sometimes, yes

The size of a shed skin is usually larger than the snake it came off of.

Post a pic of the skin showing as much detail of the markings if possible.

Sometimes you can't tell just by the color of the snake if its venomous or not. If it has a diamond shaped head, its poisonous.
