I still remember the first time I had to buy saffron threads for a recipe. I had to do a double-take when I saw that price tag.

Concentrated, yes it looks red, much like yellow food coloring looks red. But when added to food and liquid it turns a bright golden color.
By weight, it has always been worth more than gold.
The value, it’s flavor and color, is brought out through the cooking process. But if you expose it to fire it burns and is worthless.
