I'm guessing you're counting creating a Twitter Account, Instagram Account, Facebook Page and Tumblr or other simple Blog for the business as a given right?

Correct.

I have found as an admin for a local org's FB page that pictures and constant updates along with simple interactive posts with the every-now-and-again promoted post gets massive attention for us.

Completely agree. I am amazed at how some successful small businesses don't think it is a necessity to stay in touch with their customers (and market to those that aren't).

You can also get involved as a local sponsor of a do-good-for-the-community type of day. Getting involved as a volunteer org would get you some free pub that you could cross market with bigger Social Media Accounts and believe me, this generates traffic you may underestimate.

Already on it.

For my industry.. conventions/trade shows are pretty high up there. Social media/online presence is pretty high up there. And simple reaching out with a scope of services via email has been hugely successful.

Direct mail doesn't directly result in contracts, but getting your logo/"face" in front of someone before a trade show where they'll see you in person is worth a lot more than you think.
