Yes, context matters. And depending upon the tone and the reason a thing was said makes all the difference. But the thing is, I don't get offended by things. And since I'm perfectly willing to allow others the free reign to say what they want, I have little desire to shut others down for what I suspect they may have thought when they said a thing.

I'd agree. The problem is that you have lessened what you think that is to simply saying something you deem as racist. I tend to think it is better seen as levels. Someone of any race can be a bigot. Someone of any race can take it further and be a racist. Someone of any race can go even further and advocate for some pretty extreme things and be advocating for supremacy of their own race. Saying a few taboo things when you're 16 in no way rises to that third level.
