As long as you keep your pins and everything lubed the ceramic pistons don't usually crack. When the pads don't slide easily they loose contact with the ceramic piston causing the problem. I learned the hard way and replaced the front caliper on my 06 F150 at 140,000 miles. Got 160,000 miles on the other 3 calipers.
