Bodybuilder thread spinoff - Is it an eating/body image disorder?

The other thread got me thinking. Is bodybuilding like anorexia or other eating/body image disorders?
I'm not talking about female fitness competitions or people that are health nuts, run, exercise, etc. These people have a goal they reach and stay with it.
I'm am talking about bodybuilders and their quest for the biggest, bulkiest muscles. Doing things like super extreme diets, drugs, and other stuff to reach a goal they will most likely never reach because it's unattainable. Plus, how healthy is body building exactly?
I see it as a form of a body image disorder.

Sort of like the reverse of my powdered donut obsession.

I suffer from that disorder as well. Nothing like a cold glass of milk and little powdered donuts. It's just heaven.
TastyKakes had a key lime powdered donut!!!

former bodybuilder/competitive powerlifter checking in.
it wasn't so much the body image that got me. it was the competition and the discipline. I got out of a 6 year relationship and other things in my life were pretty miserable as well. it gave me something to work towards. it involved a bunch of short term goals that i was achieving. I'm pretty sure it saved my life. I ended up getting on steroids (celltech) and went down a path with that i realized was destructive and straight up retarded. Yeah, i'd say there were some mental issues involved with it.

I'm worried about his health long term ( I'm almost positive it's roids) I want to ask him without offending him or damaging our relationship
ended up getting on steroids (celltech)

Funny thing is, there often isn't a difference between these subsets. Any fitness competitors faces, as you say, "super extreme diets, drugs, and other stuff..." regardless of gender. Bodybuilders who are legitimate bodybuilders have goals they stick with. Many people who run, diet, exercise, etc. become excessive with it. But because someone competes, it's suddenly unhealthy?
I ASSUME what you're talking about is your average gym Joe versus a roided up Mr. Olympia (P.S.: your hardcore female bodybuilder also juice). Yea, steroids are far from everyday vitamins. But no one is complaining about Olympic athletes or baseball players. It's simply an extreme that many people are willing to take to reach a goal (like your health nut who won't eat or drink with their friends because of their diet, or an Olympic skater on a special training and time regimen who can't have fun with their friends anymore).
What I'm saying is, while your muscle mass guys are an admitted extreme, this is a presumptuous, ignorant post. Many "average" gym goers have eating/body image disorders and may actually be MORE unhealthy than a competitor in this sense. I've seen some sickly small looking women in the gym who aren't going to a show, or some total bros destroying their bodies with or without drugs.

To me, they are not even close (I maybe wrong). Most competitive weight lifters I see are not obsessed with their body image. They set goals that can be reached. I'm sure steroid use is huge in that sport as well, but they are using it for a different reason (not saying that's good). It seems most powerlifters have quite a bit of belly fat from their extreme diet, unlike bodybuilders, that seem to starve their bodies when competition season rolls around.

As someone who obsessively avoided drinking alcohol or eating anything fried; covered in sugar; or heavily processed for nearly two years, yes, I would say that it’s unequivocally an eating disorder. Body dysmorohia and bodybuilding are closely tied to one another in the psychological community.

Semi-retired all natural bodydybuilder here
I do it the all natural way, but there is a mental thing to it about being the biggest and the best
I punished myself in the beginning for cheating on my diet.
It was an obsession. I would compare myself to everyone in the gym.
I won 2 state titles in LA and TX, junior nationals, and about 10 small shows....and I was the same after every win. I wasn't happy with myself. I knew I could be bigger and leaner.
Haven't competed since 2012, but still keep in 11 weeks out shape.

the powerlifting got to be damaging because i was risking my health for some shite that didn't really matter in the long run. i was completely wrecking my body over something that didn't do shite for me in the long run. it wasn't "fitness". yeah it wasn't obsession with body image but it was obsession with that one rep. i would go completely out of my mind on one lift. i did it because in those 20 or 30 seconds that i was squatting 450 lbs there was nothing in the world other than that weight. all the pain and complications and bull shite went away. it was a coping mechanism.

i was lean AF. I started off as a 148. when it came time for competition i was lean AF. I switched federations to a fed that didn't test for performance enhancers and when i quit powerlifting i was lifting in the 198s (with abs). I weigh about 170 now. i miss the test and eq lol
