Rather than using a physical guide, an app called Be My Eyes will connect him with a worldwide network of sighted volunteers.
Through the camera and speakers on his smart glasses, they'll be able to see what he sees and speak to him in real time, directing him through the 26.2 miles (42.2km),
"They tell me if there's a bin or there's a parked car through the glasses - but the majority of the time we're just discussing, 'what is sight loss?'", he said.

He has been visually impaired in his right eye from the age of six, but 13 years ago noticed a shadow in his left eye. "I went to the hospital and they sat me down and said, 'Mr. Reynolds, do you drive?", he said.
"I said yes, and they said, 'hand over your license, you're going blind.' And that's how you were told."
I think the media ran with the "AI" buzzword. These smart glasses are just a camera linked to a phone via bluetooth. Still impressive that he ran just by instructions and legally blind sight.

this story has nothing to do with the topic, but it involves blind runner in a marathons, so...
anyways, one time I was running a marathon in Arkansas, and we were crossing a bridge, it was very scenic and it was about 18 miles in
I was running next to a blind man, and he was being guided by his brother
the brother told his blind brother about the bridge, and the blind brother asked him to describe it to him, and he just said "it's beautiful brother, Mom would love it"
and I fricking starting crying so damn hard, I assume it was the endorphins mixed with pain and the moment, but thats my story of when I cried in the middle of a marathon

Pretty cool app. I have had it since about 2020, and usually get 3-5 calls a year. Definitely a good feeling after helping someone out.

I have a blind friend with a pair of smart glasses. It is wild to put them on, and have it describe the scene in front of you.

The AI could very easily describe what the camera glasses are seeing.
Is this tech gonna eliminate the need for guide dogs? If instead of having an animal guide you, you have a voice instead giving you instructions on what is in front of you.

I sure hope not. A dog can sense danger, idk that AI can.
I've seen videos of these self driving cars doing some wild shite, with customers in them. Would never get in one of those death machines.

They also make glasses with built in audio sensors and aids for people hard of hearing. Wherever you look amplifies the sound, and yes, you can hear people having a "private" conversation across the room which is the negative part of that tech. Eventually they will sync this up with visual features and AI which is pretty incredible for those who need it.
