Typically means you are under balanced to the well. The type of wells in the Permian are long production laterals, so if you’re letting a little in, you’re letting a lot in. Even the water flows can bring back H2S. If it gets away from you, you can cause a blowout.
Managed pressure drilling is a different story, but still requires fairly intense supervision and competency.
