Most likely because you couldn't get your grill hot enough even if it did have a felt gasket. I've gotten my BGE pegged out a few times and regularly at 700+ for pizzas and steaks. Never had an issue. For there to be "melting", I'm sure the op just let it burn freely on accident for an extended period.

If the gasket really melted together, get a paint scraper and scrape around it until it comes loose

Try dissolving it in vinegar.
