They used to run the methyl cellulose unit balls to the walls skipping scheduled turnarounds even with all the chloride stress cracking issues. Dow had 2 others, one in Midland and one in Germany, but they didn't produce like the one in Plaquemine. It at least used to be a big money maker for the company. The same went for the CPE unit until China stole the technology.

I used to work as an operator at Glycol 2 before I moved to another block in Dow, they run that plant ragged, safety comes first until production is taking a hit, then safety takes a back seat to keeping rates up. I knew it was only a matter of time till something happened, were just lucky it wasnt worse.

Was it glycol 1 that was shutdown almost 20 years ago? Glycol must be a world market moneymaker with feedstock prices for ethylene over the last decade being so low.

I worked at G2 as an operator as well, terrible place to work. I seen some things happen that was unacceptable. Not a great place to work, someone was always getting hurt.

So many people willing to go on and on in these threads because they’ve worked in the periphery of a chemical operation, or have “buddies” who work in one... and 90% of them are completely talking out of their arse. There are maybe two or three people in this entire thread that made any sense.

Glycol just a coolant, nothing explosive should come from glycol units.

You dont have to have an explosive chemical/gas or such to have an explosion. The vessel was probably over pressured and the relief valve probably failed and didnt vent off causing the vessel to go above the MAWP (Maximum Allowable Working Pressure) and rupture.
