Look again at that image of M-42 I posted above. You won't see anything like that that through the eyepiece of a reasonably priced optical telescope.

I see Meade / Orion / Coronado went bankrupt last year. My bad, I was unaware.

I have a Celestron refractor I purchased for $100 about 30 years ago. Still works well for most events people bring up like comets or objects. But it’s all manual and kind of a bitch to find the objects in my kids attention span. I suggest something computerized. The Baton Rouge Astronomical society sets up their telescopes pretty regularly at school events and on Highland road. You can see how smooth and easy a modern scope makes things. Computerized, moves with the sky, etc.

Check out the ZWO Seestar S30 smart telescope. Small, portable, has tracking, sets up in five mintes, operates on a smart phone app. The only drawback I see is it's not good for planets, but does a great job on deep sky objects like nebula and galaxies. They're on back order because of high demand, but that will resolve itself. At a price of $350 (YES Tree fitty) it's hard to beat for the beginner.

I would have a hard time getting my mind to believe I’m actually viewing an object in space and not just a google picture that the manufacturer decided to send to my phone.

In the age of deep fakes and AI, it's easy to believe that, but I've seen several photos of people using their smart telescopes when an airplane flies though the field of view during a 10 second exposure and they catch the wingtip lights streaking across the screen - and they witness the plane while it happens. Just like this one.
