Kings Cross is a great area to stay.
Right near Kings Cross station, Euston and St Pancras stations. Those three can get you anywhere in the country and the Euro Star to mainland Europe leaves from St Pancras. Pretty much the heart of North London and you get a feel for how it really is. B/c its night and day from central London or west London like Chelsea.
Also Kings Cross tube stop is a major hub. About a 30-45min walk to the river thames and central London.
Lots of night life right in that area and places to eat in that area as well.

But staying near Leicester Square would be great for a first time visitor who wants to walk
its super expensive and super crowded.
Stay a mile or two away, save some money and just ride the tube which from say Kings Cross is maybe 10 mins.

Have you ever been to London before?
Nope. Have been to Europe but not the UK. Will more than likely be doing this trip solo.

What he said. ^^^
We found an awesome pub right around the corner from the tube station that had a whole wall full of cask ales. If you've never had cask Ale, it's a must in London.
How do you know if your getting cask ale? It's flat, slightly cooler than room temp, and delicious. It's also pumped by hand out of these.
