I just had dinner with a guy who sold cars for a few years. First, he says he left because he felt like a thief of the people of his community.
He said dealerships f**k you in 4 ways:
1. Price of vehicle you are buying
2. Financing
3. Warranty
4. Lowballing the trade in.
They can "really work with you" on one of these 4 things and still f**k you 3 times on the same deal.
The best practice, he says, is to get the list of options you want on the vehicle you want and ask for their best price. Then openly tell them you are taking the offer to other dealerships.
See many offers and pick your best offer. He says he recently bought a truck from a dealership at a slightly worse price because he liked the salesman and staff better. Needless to say, he created his own options and left happy. Btw, he saved $8500 off his first offer.
A little leg work will save you thousands.

Purchased my last 2 cars in Houston. The original price they quote is so good it's impossible to turn down. Never had to negotiate price at all.

found a vehicle I liked online, called to see if it was still available, went in for a test drive, decided to buy it. all was ok until I got to financing. on top of being a condescending cock sucker, the finance guy told me in order to get a lower interest rate on the loan I financed through them (I didn't have the best credit at the time and my car was on its last leg), I'd have to purchase a warranty along with GAP coverage. I'll take part of the blame for being ignorant to that, but it's still shitty business and slimey on their part. I'll fricking walk and take the bus wherever I need to go before I ever buy from them again.

Car dealerships screw people on the daily. This isn't something new.

Go to Lakeside in Metairie. I can tell you who to ask for.

Was this true? Was it them that said this or the bank that was actually lending the money?

Email Fred Haas in Houston I-45 North. Beat the next best offer I had by $2,290.

I second this advice. I saved a lot of money and it was the easiest vehicle purchase experience I've had so far.
