Back in My Day: Canadian Money Edition

I remember as a kid growing up in Florida in the 80s, always getting Canadian pocket change when making purchases or getting change back from a vending machine. This was highly irritating as Canadian money was worth less and most cashiers wouldn’t accept it. It was the worst feeling being a kid and finding my quarter had a caribou on the back. Boom - there goes 25 cents.
Has this issue gone away? Or was/is it specific to Florida because of its damn disproportionate number of Canadian snowbirds? Is it still going on in the Sunshine State?
I really hated Canada because of this for many, many years.

Stores in the northern tier (closer to the Canadian border) used to accept Canadian coins all the time. But the feds have cracked down on the practice so you don't see it much anymore.
Edit: I don't mind getting the occasional Canuck penny or quarter but I wouldn't want it to be a regular thing.

Lived in NY (closer to Canada) in the 80s and 90s.
Yup, many of worthless coins were had.

I grew up in Upstate NY and always had Canadian money in piggy banks as a kid as the shite was everywhere. I imagine it's still look that up there. I live in FL now and never see it down here.
