My wife is Hispanic, and had her ears pierced within months of being born. Granted her grandfather gave all the girls really nice earrings, and it wasn't cheap Walmart fake metal ones. It's the only piercing she has, and no tattoos, so I am going to say not trashy.

Most pediatricians will do it for you. Doesn’t seem trashy in that context.
My daughters were done by the ENT when she was in for tubes, right at a year old. They offered. Most of the people saying child abuse are also probably circumcised. I'd like to hear that reconciliation.

Circumcision stats
It struck me as trashy to put an infant's dick under the knife right after birth without compelling reason to do so outside of vanity and religion.
My research came up that it's basically a hygiene issue--the pediatrician I respect said there was no compelling reason to do so.
Let's face it. It's more custom/cosmetic than anything. It's less than 20% in europe but more dominant in the US and Africa.
I think over time it will decline and one day be considered barbaric, akin to female genital circumcision/mutilation.
I'm cut. But I couldn't bring myself to have it done with my son. We've discussed it, because obviously that puts him in the "minority" in the US. But I think he's OK with it and not worse for the wear.
And yes I think piercing the ear of a child who hasn't asked for it is incredibly trashy. Why stop there? Go-head with the nose and belly button.

There's actually not. Circumcision reduces STD transmission by about 1%. Not a substantial enough of a reduction to warrant cutting of a piece of a newborn's genitals. Wear a condom. Reduction of UTI/penile cancer (very small reduction) are the same benefits of performing female circumcision, which is illegal. Risk benefit is not there. If you want to cut your son's penis, go for it, but don't act like there is some huge health benefit to it. You're doing it so they fit in in the locker room. You can't call ear piercing trashy if you support circumcision.

I bought my son a Jacob's Ladder for his first birthday. Let me guess, you guys think that is trashy, too?
