The original explorers named the settlements after what they saw there. Supposedly the Istrouma Indians were pretty hardcore in Baton Rouge's case.

The red stick was a boundary marker between the hunting lands of two neighboring tribes, I believe the Choctaw to the south and Natchez to the north.
